Why

Sunflowers and pinecones.

Each sunflower seed sits 137.5° from the last. Each pinecone turns in spirals of 8 and 13. Same numbers, every time: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13.

A sunflower in full bloom against a blue sky, grown in the RarePatterns garden.
From the artist’s garden: a real seed head, the same 137.5° the Garden Signal counts.

Why code Nothing in this garden was drawn by hand. Your seed picks the numbers, the hour you visit sets the light, and your screen decides how far it gets. The rule is followed exactly, which is the only way a rule is worth following. Why this one The Garden Signal follows the sunflower: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, each square set against the last, a quarter arc in each, growing outward. That is the Garden Signal’s rule, not the collection’s. The Signals each keep their own.

Gold at midday, for the flower that grows toward the sun. Young sunflowers follow the sun by day and turn back east at night. In bloom, they stop turning and face the morning sun. The piece reads your clock the same way, so its light moves through the day with yours.

The Signals.

Sixty seconds of art and sound, and no two Signals share a rule. Fragment Lock is a field of light on a grid of sixty-pixel tiles that bends and comes apart until what remains holds. Golden Angle sets seeds 137.5° apart until the spirals show.

    Garden Signal

Your turn. Grow one. Every visit plants a fresh seed.

Each daily seed is 1 in 4.3 billion. The seed picks a run of Fibonacci numbers, and each number grows as a square, lit by your time of day.

Day 1 is the gold center, the Origin Eye. Each new day adds a pane, 137.5° from the last, like seeds in a sunflower. At 55 days, it blooms whole.

Because each pane grows from a 1-in-4.3-billion daily seed and your time of day, every piece is unique.

      About RarePatterns

A minute is long enough to find out if it holds.

RarePattern trained as a painter. For every Signal he picks the idea, the palette and the sound, then the rule runs and he doesn’t touch a frame. That’s the slow part: a rule can look finished for a week with nothing underneath it, and the piece isn’t done until it holds for the whole minute.

The rule is not the art. What makes it art is that someone decided where it stops. The sound comes out of the same code, so the film and its music are one thing.

Fragment Lock came first: a field of light on a grid of sixty-pixel tiles, bending and coming apart until only what holds is left. Golden Angle sets seeds 137.5° apart until the 34 and 55 spirals show. Two rules, no method in common. Velocity, from an idea by @solrious (opens in a new tab), is next. Then one Signal every two weeks.

Every palette is set by eye before a line of code is written: a few colors, mixed for value and light. Fragment Lock is orange and black. Golden Angle is black, sienna, yellow, the low sun.

The Gathered is smaller and separate: the sunflower’s numbers drawn with your seed instead of his. No film, no score. It isn’t a Signal. A fresh seed each visit, so another grows.

      Golden Angle

Years of sunflowers and pinecones, kept in code. Each seed sits about 137.5° from the last and each pinecone turns in spirals of 8 and 13. Golden Angle holds that place: black to grow out of, sienna for the earth, yellow for the flower, orange for the low sun. · Signal page →

Fragment Lock came first and works by another rule: a grid of light coming apart. Same care. Nothing shared but the minute.
