Garden Signal

One seed. The sunflower's numbers.Grown from one seed and the sunflower's numbers: Fibonacci digits, squares, the golden turn.

It began with yourits seed and a run of Fibonacci numbers, the same numbers found in sunflower and pinecone spirals. YourIts seed chose where the run starts. The code draws Fibonacci squares growing outward from 1, in the light of the time of day you grew it.

The first Signal. The site's music ends on its chord.

A still life made in code: sunflowers in an earthenware jug, pinecones and seeds on a stone ledge, in black, sienna, warm yellow and orange, with olive-green leaves.

The rule, written down.

And grown into form.

Before the code, there was the sunflower.

A sunflower sets each seed a golden turn from the last, and a pinecone each scale. Numbers such as 34 and 55 are found in a sunflower's spirals, 8 and 13 in a pinecone's. No plan, no hand. Just a rule, repeating.

This still life is made in code, from a limited palette, chiefly black, sienna, warm yellow and orange. Every seed is placed by the same rule the flower uses.

Black is the dark it grows from, sienna the earth, yellow the sunflower, orange the low sun. Your piece grows mostly in black and the light of its time of day, sunflower gold at midday.

Your piece grows from the same Fibonacci numbers.

Come back each day to add a pane. At 55 days your Golden Turn grows whole.Gardens shared with #GoldenTurnGarden are planned to form The Gathered.

Examples, from the same code, each from its own sample days.

Every pane grows from a seed, one number for each day. Each piece is stamped with the seed of its newest day.

  1. Seed 0000000000. A fresh number for this visit.
  2. Numbers It starts the Fibonacci digits at place 1: .
  3. Squares The code draws Fibonacci squares growing outward from 1, as many as your screen allows.
  4. Piece Each digit becomes a square tile, lit for the time of day. Same seed, same piece.

Your days grow The Golden Turn

Your first day is the Origin Eye, the gold center where the spiral begins.

Each day you come back adds a pane, a golden turn from the last. At 55 days, it grows whole. Skipped days are fine.

Why that turn? A sunflower sets its seeds, and a pinecone its scales, about 137.5° apart. Your garden follows the same turn.

Example: The Golden Turn after 55 sample days, grown whole around the gold Origin Eye
55 daysGrown whole.

Examples: one sample garden at 55 days, 100 days and a year.

Your garden

In a sunflower the seeds, and in a pinecone the scales, are set a golden turn, about 137.5°, apart. From that one turn come their spirals, such as 34 one way and 55 the other in a seed head, and 8 and 13 in a pinecone.

Your garden follows the same turn. Each pane grows from that day's seed, in the light it grew in, one golden turn from the day before. Your first day is the Origin Eye, the gold center where the spiral begins. After 377 days, a Fibonacci number, it keeps 377 panes: each new day grows its own, and older days fold into the panes between, so every day still changes it.

One pane a day, so your garden keeps time with you. At 55 days, a Fibonacci number found in sunflower spirals, it grows whole.

The Golden Turn is forming.

Why code The piece is grown, not drawn. Your seed and the Fibonacci numbers decide its pattern, the time of day sets its light, and it lays itself out to fit your screen. Why squares The code draws Fibonacci squares, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, each new one set against the last so they grow outward, with a quarter arc in each that comes close to the golden spiral. How many fit follows your screen.

Gold at midday, for the flower that grows toward the sun. Young sunflowers follow the sun by day and turn back east at night. In bloom, they stop turning and face the morning sun.

    About RarePatterns

The Signals are finished artworks by @RarePatterns (opens in a new tab). Fragment Lock, the Genesis piece, comes first, and Golden Angle follows. From there, one Signal every two weeks, each minting on Transient Labs. Trained as a painter, taught by some of Utah's top painters.

Every Signal is generative art, made in code. RarePatterns, a trained artist, directs every Signal: the idea, composition, palette and sound. AI assists in writing the code, and every decision is his. Every frame is generated by the code. The site's music ends on the chord of Fragment Lock, the Genesis piece.

Each Garden Signal grows from the numbers in sunflower and pinecone spirals, with a fresh seed every visit, so come back and another grows.

Each Signal gets its own palette, chosen by eye before the code is written, the way a traditional painting begins with a limited palette set out for its subject. It's the practice he trained in: a few colors, mixed for value and light. Fragment Lock holds to orange and black; Golden Angle works chiefly in black, sienna, warm yellow and orange.

    Collect a Signal.

Genesis mints on Transient Labs (opens in a new tab), November 2. Until then, a seed head in the archive grows a little each day. Future Signals can begin with an idea from the community.

    • Edition of 5 on Transient Labs, Ethereum: 4 available, 1 kept by the artist.
    • Five, a Fibonacci number, like the 55 and 377 in the garden.
    • You receive the Signal as a token in your wallet, one of 5.
    • On Transient Labs, connect your wallet and collect. Network fees apply.
    • Nov 2: the mint link posts on X from @RarePatterns.
    • Contract address appears here on mint day.
